About EB / TNEB / TANGEDCO

The phrase "EB bill" is unique to Tamil Nadu — it short-hands "Electricity Board bill" and dates back to when the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) was the single utility for the state. After the 2010 restructuring, generation and distribution moved to TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation) and transmission to TANTRANSCO, but everyday usage still calls it "EB". So "eb bill", "tn eb", "TNEB bill" and "TANGEDCO bill" all refer to the same thing.

Tamil Nadu uses bi-monthly billing for domestic consumers, with the first 100 units free per cycle for eligible homes — a long-running state subsidy. The slab structure is telescopic, meaning only the units within each slab are charged at that slab\'s rate. FAC (fuel adjustment) is added per unit and electricity duty (a state levy) is applied on top.

How is EB bill calculated in Tamil Nadu?
TNEB bills domestic consumers on a bi-monthly cycle using a telescopic slab structure. The first 100 units per bi-monthly cycle are free for eligible domestic consumers. Beyond that, slab rates kick in — see the table below for the exact 2025–26 rates. Fixed charges scale with sanctioned load, and a small electricity duty (6%) is added.
Are first 100 units of EB bill free?
